Multi Purpose Skin Lotion
A multipurpose skin care product makes me happy because it means that for less effort I have ticked the boxes that I am supposed to when it comes to skin care. When it comes to skin care, as with food I am incredibly fussy about the quality of what I use. It is the effort is the effort associated with the routine that is my downfall for skin care. It is fair to say that I prefer a minimalist approach to skin care. I most certainly believe that less ingredients are better. I have very sensitive skin after suffering as a child and into my teens with terrible eczema I am very careful about the products that I apply to my skin. Most commercial products irritate my skin after a short period of time.
Developing a plant based, gentle cleanser is something that I have been meaning to do for some time. Since I began working from home a couple of years ago I rarely wear make up. This means that I generally wash my face simply with warm water at the end of the day. This multi purpose lotion has very similar properties to a face cream. It works on the same principle that cleaning your skin with just a vegetable oil does. The oils attract the dirt and grime. These particles adhere to the cream and are then rinsed away. There is no soap base added to this product. It is suited to a dry, sensitive or matures skin as opposed to an oily skin. The ingredients are gentle and softening in nature, they will not strip the skin of oil.
This multi purpose skin lotion is gentle and soothing. It would make an ideal Fathers Day gift for the man in your life who is not overly fussed with having multiple skin care products. This is an all-in-one, easy to apply product. It may be used to cleanse and moisturise. After cleansing your skin will left feeling lovely and smooth and hydrated. Apply another small amount to the skin after cleansing to absorb and moisturise. It would also be the perfect item to pack when away from home and travelling and you need to simplify and reduce the items you are carting around.
My recipe is created using plant based oils and is simple to make if you follow the steps exactly as they are described below. You must take note that it is important not to overheat the fat phase of the ingredients when you are melting them and it is also important that the water added at the end of the process is neither hot nor added too quickly when blending the ingredients together. If either of these items are overlooked the water will not emulsify and will split from the cream.
This is my recipe for a gentle multi purpose skin care lotion that can be used as a cleanser and a moisturiser. Make it at home yourself or as a gift for the dad of the house.
Steralise jars used by either – washing them in the dishwasher prior to use, or placing them for 15 minutes in an oven set to 120 degrees celcius (allow to cool prior to using)
You may also place the containers in a pot of water, bring it to boil for 5-8 minutes and dry thoroughly prior to filling.
Use clean equipment at all times – use boiling water to rinse any stirring and blending equipment prior to use.
Do not heat the fat phase above 70 degrees celcius
Take note of measurements used as they are important.
For a recipe modification you could use a floral water instead of boiled water. I had intended to do that for this lotion until I realised that I had run out of stock. I had intended to use Rose Water. Next time. Note: This recipe includes naturally sourced ingredients, despite this it is still possible for one or more ingredients to be unsuitable for some people. If you experience any reaction or discomfort (as with any product, or food) discontinue use immediately.
This product does not contain a preservative and so as a result does not have along shelf life. You may seek out a product called Amiox which is a rosemary extract, this will add to the storage life of hand made skin care.

I love your cream offerings and this is no exception. I am going to make it for a facial cleanser as an alternative to mixed oils. If you did add preservative to lengthen the life Kyrstie would you use Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol and if so, how much please as I find many creams only last one month until you see that dreaded mould start to form and it gets frustrating at times.
Thanks Merryn for your lovely comment. I have not ever used Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol so I can’t advise on that I’m sorry. If I add a preservative I choose to use a product called Amiox which is a rosemary extract. You only need a tiny dilution – .05% The brand I use is not readily available but I did just google Amiox and there are online stores selling their own brand of it. Hope this helps. Kyrstie
