Lentil Burger Recipe

Lentil Burger Recipe. Quick spiced lentil burgers with beetroot relish. A family friendly vegetarian meal.

  • ½ cup Persian Red Lentils
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon marjoram
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 garlic cloves chopped
  • 2 eggs -whisked
  • ½ cup grated sweet potato
  • ¼ cup buckwheat flour optional

Beetroot Relish

  • 1 large beetroot peeled and grated
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 red onion small
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

To Serve

  • Fillings of choice
  • Sour dough rolls/buns


  1. Rinse the lentils and set a pot of water to boil.
  2. Add the lentils and cook on a medium simmer for 20 minutes
  3. While the lentils are cooking make the relish
  4. Add the oil to a pan and add the beetroot and onion and allow to soften on a low heat for 15 minutes
  5. Add the sugar to the beetroot and onion and stir
  6. Add the balsamic and allow to cook until the liquid is cooked out
  7. Remove the relish from the heat and set aside
  8. Return to the lentils, drain any excess water and place in a food processor with the herbs and process for a few seconds to smooth out the mixture
  9. Allow to cool and then add the eggs and grated sweet potato
  10. Mold the mixture into balls
  11. Roll each of the balls in the buckwheat flour (optional)
  12. Heat oil for cooking in a pan and add burgers, flatten each one with the back of the spatula to a burger shape
  13. Cook on each side until golden brown
  14. Add to warm buns with the relish and other toppings of choice

Recipe Notes

The lentils and the relish may be prepared in advance.
Keep the relish in the fridge and consume within a few days
