Join me in the 2013 Local Harvest Challenge
March 24, 2013
March 24, 2013
For the week commencing April 1 – April 7th I will be supporting local farmers and business. This is not something new for my family and I, we do this as routine.
I will be participating in the challenge to broaden my knowledge of local producers. I think that I have become a little too comfortable with my regular haunts and favourite suppliers around town. I am not going to be ditching any of my favorites, but I do think there is room to discover some more. I would like to share some of the things I have learned about the producers in my area, and tips on how you can do the same in your own area.
You can read more about the challenge at the Local Harvest website or read on:
One of the aims of the Local Harvest Challenge is to encourage people to find good food close to you.
You can participate in the challenge by taking a bite sized, meal sized or feast sized challenge.
Bite Sized – choose 1 local item per day to add to your diet
Meal Sized – choose two or more things per day
Feast Sized – Eat only locally produced sustainable food for the week.
*Note: you are allowed 5 wild cards (eg: coffee) to help you get through the week.
You may also choose to complete some related activities. Find many examples on the Local Harvest site.
My participation in the week will revolve around activities and the sharing of information. I would like to use this space to provide information and inspiration to hopefully motivate you to consider how you shop and some ways you can support your local producers.
My aims for the week are :
Please join me and share your experience of the week, hints, and things you learn as the week progresses. I will be doing this via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
Will you join me to support local farmers and find some lovely new food choices near you ?
Which challenge will you take? Bite, Meal or Feast sized?
If you would like to go local for the week, please leave me a comment below and be sure to follow on Facebook to share your week.

I’m in…lets go for feast size. We can help everyone out via our Farm Gate Produce being open each Saturday -144 Emmersons rd, Lovely Banks. If people want to know what we have available they can see what we have each week on our fb site Home Made Produce
Fantastic Debbie, I think that the feast sized challenge will be a breeze for you 🙂 I will email you more info this week. Welcome aboard! Kyrstie
I’d love to take part Kyrstie. Feast sized please – and of course the BCFsM will support eveyones’ needs for finding local produce on the Bellarine. 🙂 So how ‘local’ do we go, as in a km radius?
Hi Sally, I am so pleased that you are joining in. You can choose the km radius that is appropriate for you when you join the team I have set up. I will email you with details this week.

Hi Kyrstie
Happy to join in – it’s pretty much what we are doing for the whole of 2013, but on a budget. Someone has to prove that eating locally & sustainably is not only for those that can afford it! My somewhat neglected blog is ourfoodroots.wordpress.com – I’ve been busy in the garden & kitchen with the change of seasons.
Enjoying your blog Kyrstie, thanks
Sam
Hi Sam, I am thrilled to have you join in and am off to check out your blog now. I love your 2013 plan and am really looking forward to reading about it. Kyrstie
LOVE this challenge.
I would have love to have joined in and taken the feast option – but I’m away for work all that week (and eating workshop supplied food) except Sunday. So I’m thinking I’ll do a Feast Day on the Sunday where we eat only local food.
Good luck Kyrstie. I’m looking forward to following your progress.
Hi Tricia, thanks for stopping by. I think that you and your family get points for doing the feast sized challenge all year around! Kyrstie
I’m in!
Fabulous! So pleased you are joining in 🙂
