How to Make Newspaper Seedling Pots

Last year we saved the seeds from our favorite organic and heirloom tomato plants. This year I was over zealous raising them and had many more seedlings than I could fit into my garden. I did not want them to be thrown away so I used an idea I saw on Pinterest. We have made these as Christmas gifts for the careers at my childrens childcare center.
This is how we made our seedlings into Christmas gifts.
Roll a piece of newspaper or craft paper around a glass jar
Remove the jar and then fold up the ends and secure with a piece of tape
Push the ends of the paper inside the pot
Pot ready for planting
Punky’s gift for his favorite teacher
Add the soil and the seedling then water lightly. Label the pot with the name of the tomato on a gift tag and tie it with a ribbon or string.
These pots can be planted straight into the garden soil. This avoids additional stress to the seedling.
There is no need to remove the plant. the newspaper will decompose in the soil.
Last year we made Christmas biscuits – Cinnamon Orange Butter Biscuits. You can find the recipe for those here.
Do you give small gifts to your children’s teachers?
Later this week I will have something exciting to share with you. Be the first to know and sign up to my Free Fresh Updates. You can do this in the side column at the top of the page.

What a GREAT present idea – and I like the fact that you can plant the whole lot straight into the ground…easy peasy!
Hi Kyrstie, What a fabulous idea! The teachers will love receiving these gifts, there’s nothing better than tomatoes from the garden. In the past I’ve given teachers a tin of biscuits or a mug with a christmas tree ornament in it!
What a lovely and thoughtful gift idea! <3 it!
What a wonderful idea! Love it!
